Founding History -Soka Gakkai International

The meaning of Soka Gakkai is “ Society for Creation of Value” and it was established in 1930 by Tsunesaburo Makiguchi who was an author, reformist and educator. The SGI was founded for educators in the beginning. He believed in the tenets of Nichiren Buddhism and this led the SGI to rapidly develop into a major community center. It was a means to help people tap into their hidden potentials and spread the teachings of Buddhism. The ideals of Buddhism helped in a large way to transform and reform the education as well as society in Japan. However, the SGI initially faced a lot of oppression from the militarist group of Japan. Tsunesaburo Makiguchi and his closest aide Josei Toda were put in prison however Tsunesaburo Makiguchi died while in jail. After his release Josei Toda continued to promote the principles of Buddhism as an effective means of self-empowerment. It was a means to overcome hindrances in life and tap into hidden potential. Besides the above, a person also developed hope, wisdom, courage and confidence to face challenges in life. He propagated the term human revolution to promote and express the core concept of Nichiren Buddhism. He stated that everyone was capable of gaining enlightenment in their lifetime and with Josei Toda as its President Soka Gakkai International started to grow and flourish in Japan.

Today, the Soka Gakkai International USA is an esteemed name when it comes to Buddhism and its teachings. It has brought empowerment to many men and women across the nation and it a powerful channel to find compassion, peace and wisdom in one’s life.
